Africa & the Middle East

The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to.

Richard Mullin

Having only had the most cursory brush with the mother continent, I’m still the object of Mullins’ envy. Still, Africa and the Middle East (two disparate regions that I hold together in my mind) have delivered some of my most memorable travel experiences to date, including driving around Oman and wandering the souqs of Doha.

The first time I arrived in Africa it was by boat from Spain. Morocco was an unforgettable (and if I’m honest, overwhelming) entrée. On my most recent trip to Mauritius, I got hooked on the unfamiliar all over again.

Singing minarets, thronging fish markets, dhow boats and crowded carpet shops – I get giddy with excitement just thinking about it.
