The city is a quaint mix of old mansions, Byzantine churches, cobblestone streets and cafes. Surrounded by Lake Orestiada with the mountains of Grammos and Vitsi in the background, it’s a romantic and picture-perfect city. Kastoria is also devoid of mass tourism and summer temperatures rarely rise above 30C, making it an ideal Greek summer destination when the islands are scorching and crawling with tourists.

Even though Kastoria is not a big city, there is plenty for couples to do:

Balos Lagoon – the most beautiful beach on Crete

Rarely do you come across a place that truly leaves you speechless – but Balos Beach is definitely one of them. Tucked away in the far northwestern corner of Crete, the biggest island in Greece, at the end of a wild dirt road that follows the edge of high cliffs, this spectacular horseshoe lagoon is truly one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Made up of a lovely white sand beach and a tiny isthmus connecting it to the bulbous spectacle of Cape Tigani, stunning Balos Beach is the most photographed beach in Crete (and there is plenty of competition). Coming down from the parking area the panoramic view is incredible, with the luminescent blue water split dramatically by the narrow strip of bright white sand.

Balos could be the best place in Crete for couples. Lovebirds can simply soak up the amazing views, hire a lounger to relax and enjoy the sun, or hike up Cape Tigani to check out the classic little church and an exceptional panoramic viewpoint.

Balos Beach is only 15 kilometres from the nearest city of Kissamos, yet the slow, bumpy journey still takes around 45 minutes by car. Which is why at least half the visitors to Balos Beach join an organised boat tour.

The Ionian island of Zakynthos might just be Greece’s worst kept secret. The ‘Flower of the Levant’ as it’s known attracts thousands of tourists come summer – but in the shoulder season, it’s still possible to find privacy and peace.

The most iconic spot on the island is without a doubt Navagio Beach or ‘Smugglers Cove’, where a perfectly placed shipwreck sits on golden sands, framed by white cliffs. It conjures fanciful stories of hidden treasure and lost love, and is unsurprisingly a favourite photo spot for couples – both from the shore, and standing atop one of the rock walls looking down over the cove.

One of the best Greek islands for couples who enjoy watersports, Zakynthos has dozens of blue caves that are only accessible by small boat. Spectacular stone arches can be found around Cape Marathia, while the island’s northern and eastern sides have sandy beaches.

Marathonisi islet is ruggedly beautiful and ideal for snorkelling, while Cameo Island with its long wooden jetty is an incredible spot for sunset drinks.
