Should you use Airbnb in Budapest?

Budapest is an awesome city and one of Europe’s must-visit capitals. However, it does err on the touristy side, especially in summer high season. If you opt to visit Budapest in winter or shoulder season instead (like I did), you can find some great deals on accommodation across the board.

When I spent a week in Budapest, I purposefully chose an Airbnb in a residential neighbourhood so that I could soak up the local vibes and escape the hubbub. If you’re planning a quiet break or romantic retreat, Airbnb is a great alternative to the hostel scene.

By the same token, there are plenty of Airbnbs right in the heart of Budapest’s bar and dining precincts, so it can also be a great choice if you’re visiting for the nightlife and want your own space to come home to at night.

Using Airbnb in Budapest is very affordable, especially for longer stays but also for quick one or two-night visits. The average nightly price for a Budapest Airbnb is 59 USD. All listings here are in the 50 USD/night price range, with many under 30 USD.

Budapest is well-connected with trams and the subway, but it’s still crucial to choose a good location for your stay. All the Airbnbs listed here are walking distance from Budapest’s main attractions. Some even boast views of the Danube.

99% of Airbnbs in Budapest are on the eastern Pest side of the river, mainly in the Jewish Quarter and District V, which runs along the river. If it’s your first time visiting Budapest, I recommend choosing a place in either of these two locations.

There are only a few listings on the Buda side. If this part of the city intrigues you, I’ve also included two Castle Hill properties on the list.

Airbnb is perfectly legal in Budapest, but subject to the same ethical considerations as in any other big city. Do your research, and be a responsible traveller.

  • Location: District VI (close to Andrassy Boulevard and the Opera House)

This apartment oozes old-world European glamour – I can just see myself rolling in after a night at the opera, throwing my pearls on the nightstand and collapsing onto the round bed (don’t worry, it doesn’t rotate!).

A former diplomat’s residence, the space sleeps up to four guests in two separate bedrooms. Parquetry floors, peach-coloured paintwork throughout and tasteful retro fittings add to the enchanting atmosphere, while a spacious kitchen and generous living room makes the apartment practical and comfortable for longer stays.

The location is superb, just footsteps to the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky subway station. As you walk out the door each morning via the heritage white-marble lobby, a clear view of St. Stephen’s Basilica is there to greet you.

2. Best Panorama

  • Location: Castle District, Buda (close to the Castle Hill Funicular)

The name says it all: This little flat is all about the views of the Chain Bridge and river. This is one of only two Budapest Airbnbs on the list that are located on the Buda side.

The historic building was built in the 19th century and served as a residence for a prominent Hungarian statesman. After WWII, the property was inherited by a family of artists – your host’s ancestors. Art and furniture from their personal collection are displayed prominently throughout.

The combined living/sleeping space accommodates two in a double bed and feels a bit like a Parisian painter’s studio. With the Danube as your muse, no doubt the space will work its magic and bring out your inner creative. Bohemian accoutrements and a lovely mustard lounge add to the eclectic feel.

A cute kitchen stocked with traditional Hungarian spices and a sunny breakfast table complete the space.

3. D’ Crown 6 Budapest Airbnb

Reservations here

  • Location: District VII (close to Dohány Street Synagogue)

One of the more modern apartments on the list, this loft-style space combines classic Budapest style with modern conveniences. Split over two levels, it sleeps up to four in a quartet of single beds located on the mezzanine (perfect for a friends’ getaway, maybe not for a double date!).

Downstairs, a newly renovated bathroom, kitchen, dining area and lounge – all illuminated by generous picture windows – provide everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The Jewish Quarter location makes this apartment perfect for a food-fuelled weekender. Excellent ruin pubs (including Szimpla Kert) and restaurants (including Mazel Tov) are all within walking distance.

The heritage entryway and distinctive green door add to this listing’s charm. Note that the location right above a popular street can be a little noisy.

4. Superior Apartment #2

  • Location: District V (close to Elizabeth Square and the Budapest Eye)

A cut above the other listings in this popular corner of Budapest, this studio apartment is halfway between the Jewish Quarter and St. Stephen’s Basilica, combining the best of both worlds. The Danube is an easy stroll away via the incredible Vigadó Concert Hall.

Drop pendant lamps and a considered mix of Art Deco and Scandinavian furnishings make this apartment both visually pleasing and practical. I particularly love the use of duck-egg blue paint to distinguish between the ultra-modern utility area (kitchen, bathroom and entryway) and more subdued sleeping space. Cane chairs, linen bedsheets, double-height windows and a freestanding mirror add an extra touch of easy luxury.

The compact kitchen features a bar fridge and double hotplate, perfect for prepping a quick apéritif before you hit the town. When you do, you’ll be brushing shoulders with guests of the nearby Ritz Carlton – only your Budapest stay is much more budget-friendly.

Deak Square subway and the airport bus station are both walking distance, making this apartment ideal for a city break for two.

5. Exquisite Panorama Suite at Basilica

  • Location: District V (close to Elizabeth Square and the Budapest Eye)

Get ready to unpack your suitcase and settle in – this spacious Budapest Airbnb will have you feeling like a local in no time.

Renovated in 2018, the 64-square-metre apartment features full-height soundproof glass doors for maximum natural light throughout the day, a spacious living room, and an open kitchen. The floor plan is extremely well devised, with the bedroom tucked at the back of the property away from the street, and a massive bathroom with a washer included. There’s room for two friends on the sofa bed.

Italian parquet floors and Spanish ceramics are a nice touch, but this place feels utterly ‘Budapest’ thanks to its commanding views of the iconic Budapest Eye. The long balcony is a dream in the early mornings.

St. Stephen’s Basilica is your next door neighbour, and at the front of the apartment you’ll find Deak Square and transport to take you anywhere in the city (including to and from the airport) with ease.

6. Cozy Little Studio Next to the Synagogue

Reservations here

  • Location: District V (close to Dohány Street Synagogue)

If practicality is your key concern, this neat and tidy third-floor apartment is efficiently elegant. The small kitchen includes an oven and a dishwasher, there’s a washing machine, and the double bed is cleverly separated from the living space with a half-wall.

At only 25-square-metres, you’ll need to stretch your legs every now and then – not a problem since this apartment is walking distance from the Synagogue, the Jewish Quarter, and all the marvellous nooks and crannies of Budapest’s most atmospheric neighbourhood.

7. Vintage Downtown Apartment

  • Location: Erzsébetváros (District VII)

A sweet little home away from home, this Budapest Airbnb has loads of character and vintage charm. I’m a huge fan of the retro apple-green chairs, the 70s TV (strictly ornamental of course), and especially the funky prints and sheets of framed floral wallpaper.

The kitchen and bathroom are also retro, so don’t expect any high-tech appliances. Still, the apartment is well-appointed with a microwave and an oven – the kind that your grandma used to cook her best pies (or perhaps a strudel would be more apt in this context). The building is local through and through, with a cute internal courtyard.

The apartment sleeps up to four people and is pet-friendly. Ruin pubs, restaurants, and the Blaha Lujza Square transport hub and subway station are all close by.

8. DOB Design City Center

  • Location: District VII (close to Klauzál Market Hall)

Clean and minimal, this apartment is straight from the pages of Budapest’s top interior design magazine (or maybe Pinterest Hungary’s homepage). I adore the white-washed parquetry and indoor plants. A few refurbished 70s gems add personality.

Located on the third floor, the space is sun-lit and breezy. The double-height ceiling adds volume, while the loft sleeping space is extra cosy (a pull-out couch brings total occupancy to four). A separate room houses a petite kitchenette with double gas cooker, a breakfast table, and a washing machine.

The historic building puts on all the charms, boasting open corridors and creaky stairs with gorgeous wrought-iron banisters. Despite being just off Nagykörút Grand Boulevard near some of Budapest’s best nightclubs and bars, guests report minimal noise pollution.

The closest subway station is at Blaha Lujza.

9. Presidential Apartment

  • Location: District V (close to Erzsébet Square)

Positively palatial, this apartment sleeps up to four guests. Huge bay-style windows, blonde wood floors, sheer drapes and pendant lights give the space a light, comely feel. Wicker chairs add a touch of vintage glamour, while the bathroom and generous kitchenette are ultra-modern and well-appointed.

The bedroom looks directly out to the Budapest Ferris wheel – quite a spectacular backdrop, especially when it’s lit up at night. My favourite feature of this apartment is the breakfast table for two, set right against the window.

The inner-city location is ideal for sightseeing, and there’s a transport hub close by.

10. Industrial Downtown Apartment

Reservations here

  • Location: District VII (close to Blaha Lujza Square)

With its split-tone mint and porcelain-coloured walls, this sweet apartment is a breath of fresh air. It has the bones of a classic: hardwood floors, high ceilings and generous windows, finished with a mix of quirky retro fittings and Scandi-style furniture.

The large kitchen has an oven and gas burner, and the living room features a study desk. The bedroom is a bit tight, but it’s an acceptable trade-off for a well-proportioned bathroom with cute pressed floor tiles. Four people can fit, and the apartment is pet-friendly.

11. Apartment Norma

  • Location: Castle Hill, Buda (close to Batthyány Square)

The second listing on the Buda side of the river, this apartment sits north of the Chain Bridge. The 1930s building it’s housed in is part of a quiet, residential pocket.

Views of Buda Castle are available from the windows and balcony – and you can even catch a glimpse of the Fisherman’s Bastion. The stairs to the latter are just a 10-minute walk away, perfect when you want to step out for sunset.

Design-wise, a soothing palette of cream and marmalade, billowy curtains and a big, comfy bed give this place a heartwarming feel. The black-and-white prints of old Budapest are a nice touch. The modest kitchenette includes a plug-in hotplate and a kettle, and there’s a washing machine.

When it’s time to cross the river, the Batthyány subway station is a five-minute walk.

12. Big, Beautiful, Bright & Two Bikes

Reservations here

Location: District VII (close to Szimpla Kert)

Perched above a leafy park, this Budapest apartment has homely charm in spades. Heigh ceilings and tall windows give the space an open, welcoming atmosphere.

This apartment has soul and a special lived-in feel (probably because the host did live here for 10 years, tweaking everything to her personal taste). I love the wooden palate bed, the study nook and the open clothes hanging space. The bathroom is newly renovated, and the full kitchen features the cutest little freestanding gas stove I ever did see!

The best thing about this place is the location. Smack-bang in the centre of the Jewish District, it’s just footsteps from the best bars and eateries. As the name says, it comes with two bicycles that you can use to get around town.
